Field Trips

Whittier Elementary School recognizes that our location in Washington, DC provides a plethora of fun and educational locations close by for engaging field trips. These field trips allow students to learn more about what is covered in our classrooms by giving them the opportunity to see and feel what other students may only read about in textbooks. Whittier EC knows that such experiences reinforce learning and allow students to put what they learn into the greater context of our community, culture, and world.

Previous destinations for field trips have included the National Museum of African American History & Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, Cox Farm, the United States Botanic Garden, the College Park Aviation Museum, the National Zoo, the Maryland Science Center, Urban Pirates in the Baltimore Harbor, and the Anacostia Science Museum.

In addition to traditional field trips that take place during the school day, Whittier provides our students with some exceptional opportunities to travel outside of the District for overnight trips. These have included going up to New York City to take in the museums and a Broadway show, heading down to Atlanta to tour the city’s colleges and universities, and our annual fifth grade camping trip at Camp Fraser in the Fraser Preserve near Great Falls, VA.
