Before care 

To support any families who might need it, Whittier Elementary School is happy to once again offer Before Care services to any students who need to arrive at school before when our doors open at 8:00 a.m. each day. 

If you would like your student(s) to participate in Before Care, please complete this form to apply.  

Before Care FAQS:

When does it begin? 

  • Before Care begins on Monday, August 28 at 7:00 a.m. for K-5th . 

  • Before Care begins on Thursday, August 31; please follow the DCPS entry guidance for students in our Early Childhood Program. 

How do we gain access to the building? 

  • Please use the side door adjacent to the upper playground behind our outdoor garden. A teacher will greet your child and take attendance. 

How long is before-care? 

  • Before Care is one hour long.  At 7:59 a.m., students in grades K-5 and 8th will be escorted to the cafeteria for breakfast. Students in PS 3 and PK 4 will remain in the gym with instructional aides until 8:30 a.m. PS 3 and PK 4 students will have breakfast in the classroom. 

Who runs beforecare? 

  • All staff members working Before Care are Whittier Elementary School faculty members cleared to work by DC Public Schools. 

How much does it cost? 

  • Before Care is free for Whittier Elementary School families.

Is beforecare offered every day? 

  • We operate 5 days a week unless we are closed due to inclement weather, conferences, or on any other days when DC Public Schools is closed.  

When does beforecare end? 

  • Beforecare will end on the last day of school in June of 2023.  

What is the curriculum for beforecare? 

  • For the first month, we will do team-building activities to build trust and a strong culture. We will also offer homework help and physical activity. We will implement additional enrichment activities beginning in October. 

After Care

To better support the needs of our busy families, Whittier Elementary School is thrilled to once again provide After Care in the school year 2020-2021 through the DCPS Afterschool Programs. Students who are enrolled in After Care can stay after school from 3:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. Students are provided a nutritious snack and participate in fun educational activities with Whittier teachers and staff and/or one of our various partners, such as Jumpstart or the Howard University branch of Jewels Incorporated. 

Registration for After Care will open on July 27th using this website.

an extension of the traditional school day, WHERE teachers review topics covered during the school day in small groups and students are given more time to practice and master educational concepts, both of which produce better outcomes for students.

Extended Day takes place on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
